Tony Roberts
Chief Executive
  Tony's interest in applying ICT to international development began when he volunteered as a computer trainer in Nicaragua in 1988 via the organistion CODA International. He went on to become Executive Director of CODA where he spent 10 years - much of it living and working in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa.

Tony then spent four years at UEL as a lecturer - teaching across a range of Batchelor of Science degree programmes assessing the relationship between new technology and social change.

Tony founded Computer Aid International in 1998 and was the Chief Executive Officer from 1999 to 2007. In November 2007 Tony chose to focus full-time on the task of further developing Computer Aid's programmes on the ground in developing countries and so took on the role of  Director of International Programmes.

Gladys Muhunyo
Assistant Director: Africa Programme
 

Gladys Muhunyo is the most senior member of staff at Computer Aid's Africa HQ in Nairobi from where she oversees the organisation's expanding programme of work across the continent.

Originally a teacher and then the manager of an internet service provider, Gladys was recruited as Computer Aids first ever East Africa Programme Officer, since when she has risen through the ranks to become Assistant Director: Africa Programme.

"Enabling organisations to achieve the practical benefits of ICT gives me great joy", says Gladys, "and I am continually learning of new ways to bridge the digital divide."

Gladys has 14 years experience in the field of ICT for Development, travelling widely across Africa and personallly contributing to many projects applying affordable ICTs to education and social development.

     

Anne Musyoki
West Africa
Programme Officer
 

As West Africa Programme Officer Anne is responsible for building awareness of Computer Aid in Benin, Gambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Togo. She is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with recipients, as well as creating and maintaining partnerships.

Born in Kenya, she lived in the United States for six and half years, where she worked as a Technical Trainer with the Computer Technology Institute. Throughout her stay in the United States, she volunteered with several NGOs in community development projects.

Anne is a graduate of La Salle University, Philadelphia where she earned an MBA in Information Technology.

     

Benjamin Makai
East Africa
Programme Officer
 

Benjamin oversees Computer Aid International's work in East Africa, including Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia and Sudan. His role involves liasing with partners and recipients of computers, as well as building awareness of Computer Aid.

Benjamin has over a decade of experience in ICT, in both the ICT4D and the private sector. Before joining Computer Aid, he worked as an ICT officer for the Kenyan Government on a joint initiative with the European Union to alleviate poverty through tourism development. He also worked on the Kenya ICT Policy Project, as well as working with not-for-profit organisations Plan International and Pelum Kenya, and for major Kenyan telcommunications companies Safaricom and Flashcom.

He holds a BSc in Computer Sciences from Egerton University and various IT certifications. He is currently pursuing an MBA and a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) qualification. 

     

Tito Wambua
Francophone Africa
Programme Officer
 

Tito Wambua is Computer Aid's Francophone Africa Programme Officer currently focusing on Rwanda, Burundi, Cameroon, and DRC.

Tito joined Computer Aid from World Relief where he had been working as an Assistant Programme Manager on their Kenyan HIV orphans programme.

Tito gained a Masters in organisational development gained from the United States International University.

     

Leonard Mware
Projects Manager
 

Leonard Mware is Computer Aid's Projects Manager, based in Nairobi. Leonard has responsibility for developing and implementing a range of ICT4D projects across Africa.

Leonard was previously at Maseno University, Kenya where he was responsible for first developing their e-learning strategy and then established their e-learning department.

     

Arnold Wafula
Southern Africa Programme Officer
 

Arnold Wafula is Computer Aid's Southern Africa Programme Officer with responsibility for Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, South Africa and Namibia.

Arnold is a communications specialist and has lived and worked in Zambia, South Africa, Nigeria as well as Kenya. His experience includes working as a consultant for UNICEF; a journalism  trainer for BBC World Service; an on-line editor for One World Africa and, most recently as a project advisor for Farm-Africa. Arnold is currently pursuing an MBA. 

     

Ugo Vallauri
Technical Research & Development Officer
 

Ugo works in Computer Aid's Nairobi office and is researching new technologies and services that Computer Aid could offer in the future to serve the needs of our partners. His main research interests are connectivity in rural areas, alternative power solutions and adaptive technology applications.

Before joining Computer Aid, Ugo worked in the not-for-profit sector developing appropriate technologies and communication practices for sustainable agriculture projects in the developing world. He has also consulted for a United Nations ICT project and has been involved in various new media and independent journalism projects.

Ugo holds a degree in Communication Studies from the University of Bologna, Italy.

     

Samia Zoued
International Programmes Officer
 

Samia is responsible for processing large applications of computers in French and Spanish  from not-for-profit organisations in developing countries and for helping the International Development team based in Nairobi, Kenya increase the number of PCs reaching beneficiary organisations.  She is also responsible for building awareness and maintaining relationships with Computer Aid's recipients in Latin America and  Africa namely Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion, Comoros, Seychelles, Marocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lybia and Egypt.

Prior to working for Computer Aid, Samia worked in the commercial sector including Ernst & Young. She then gained experience within the voluntary sector by working for Non Violence Peace Force on the Palestine-Israel conflict and the British Red Cross Refugee Services.

Samia studied in France, Spain and Scotland where she obtained a number of qualifications, including a Masters in Business studies, a degree in International Business and a degree in Project Management and Economics. Samia also speaks fluent Arabic.

Stephen Campbell
Director of Fundraising
 

Stephen is responsible for developing and writing funding applications in conjunction with our partners to deploy refurbished PCs in volume to schools and universities. He also works with NGOs developing joint projects across a broad spectrum of development activities.

Stephen is in charge of finding new financial donors on behalf of our partners and submitting funding applications to medium to large-sized trusts and foundations. Prior to working with Computer Aid International, Stephen worked on a voluntary basis for two UK-based overseas development organisations, involved in fair trade and rights-based advocacy projects.

     

Carol Thanki
Trust Partnerships Officer
 

Carol is responsible for securing funding for Computer Aid International from small to medium sized charitable trusts and foundations.  After graduating from University College London with a BSc. in Mathematics, she initially volunteered as an intern within the fundraising department at Computer Aid before being offered a permanent position.

Carol possesses extensive voluntary experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers on immigration issues.  She is currently undertaking another degree course in Social Sciences with Development Studies to complement and enhance her work at Computer Aid.

Anja ffrench
Director of Marketing and Communications
 

Anja is responsible for the marketing of Computer Aid’s decommissioning services, including PR in conjunction with Computer Aid’s PR company. Anja also develops relationships with companies, local authorities, government departments and educational institutions interested in donating their IT equipment to Computer Aid. The supply of PCs is vital to Computer Aid's work to enable schools and community organisations in the developing world to take advantage of the benefits of ICT.

Before working at Computer Aid, Anja was at CRISP, a sustainable development charity, where she worked on a computer reuse project. Prior to this she worked for the Resource Alliance, a charity helping to build the fundraising capacity of the voluntary sector worldwide. Anja holds a Masters in Development Studies.

     

Deirdre Maguire
PC Donations and Marketing Officer
 

Deirdre's main responsibilities are to develop relationships with potential donors of PCs in the UK and to implement marketing strategies to increase awareness of Computer Aid's services within the UK. Deirdre is also responsible for Computer Aid's cartridge and mobile phone recycling scheme.

Prior to working at Computer Aid, Deirdre held various roles in the voluntary sector; focusing on community development she worked for Sheffield Women's Education and Training, and the Federation for Community Development Learning and she volunteered with The Northern Refugee Centre. More recently Deirdre worked in fundraising at Remember A Charity.

     

Essie Parks
PC Donations and
Logistics Officer
 

Essie's main responsibility as PC Donations and Logistics Officer is to provide a front line service for Computer Aid International in order to facilitate the collection of IT Equipment from companies, universities and government departments who wish to donate their IT equipment to Computer Aid.

Before working at Computer Aid, Essie worked in the Ministry of Social Development in Trinidad and Tobago, where she worked for the National Plan of Children Secretariat. Subsequent to this, Essie worked as a volunteer for the international charity Action Against Hunger, based in London.

Essie holds a BSc in Economics and Finance and an MSc in Social Policy and Development.

Helen Macfoy
Finance Manager
 

As the Finance Manager, Helen is responsible for the financial management of Computer Aid International. Helen has over fifteen years’ experience of working in UK charity finance in both paid and voluntary positions.

Prior to joining Computer Aid, Helen previously worked as the Finance & Administration Manger at Centre 404, a charity that provides services for people with learning difficulties & their families.

Helen is ACIS qualified and is presently doing further accounting studies.

     

Hitesh Chauhan
ICT Manager
 

As the ICT Manager, Hitesh's main responsibilities are the maintainance of internal network systems and communication equipment. His work involves the application of proprietary and open source software both within Computer Aid International and for implementation on refurbished PCs.

Hitesh joined Computer Aid International, first as a volunteer and then as the ICT Manager in 2003.

David Griffiths
General Production Manager
 

As General Production Manager, David is responsible for managing all aspects of production at Computer Aid's London workshop.  David manages  the day to day running of the production facilities, which includes taking deliveries of PC donations, stock management, asset tracking, data wiping, refurbishing and upgrading, packaging and dispatch of Computer Aid's PCs and laptops to
its projects overseas.

Before working at Computer Aid, David was a self-employed Analyst / Programmer, following 12 years working in the software industry. David initially worked as a volunteer at Computer Aid before being hired as a permanent member of staff in 2006.
