Bridging the Digital Divide in Remote Kenya

In the heart of remote Kenya, where electricity is scarce and opportunities for digital learning are limited, a new initiative is transforming lives and classrooms. As part of the Kenya Digital Schools program, we are taking bold steps to bridge the digital divide and bring technology-powered education to underserved communities.

In most regions, we typically provide desktop computers to schools. However, in this particular project, we faced a unique challenge – the schools are located far from the national electricity grid. Without reliable power, traditional solutions would not work.

Beneficiaries outside classroom

To overcome this hurdle, in partnership with Dell Technologies, Joyineering Fund, and Choice Humanitarian, we designed an innovative solar-powered learning solution centred around laptops. These devices can be charged through solar energy, eliminating the need for a constant power connection. To complement this, we deployed Starlink internet to ensure consistent, high-speed connectivity, enabling uninterrupted access to online learning resources for both students and teachers.

But we didn’t stop at the deployment of technology.

Building Local Capacity for Long-Term Impact

Recognising the importance of sustainability, we trained two teachers from each participating school along with a representative from a local Community-Based Organisation (CBO). These trained champions will now lead the charge in spreading digital literacy—teachers will train their students, while CBO representatives will engage parents and the wider community.

This approach ensures that digital skills are shared widely, creating ripple effects beyond school walls and fostering community-wide inclusion.

Empowering Classrooms and Communities

Launched in three schools in Kwale County, the project’s impact stretches beyond academia. In addition to laptops, each school received projectors and printers to further enrich learning and foster community engagement.

  • Projectors will be used for school functions and community sensitisation sessions on vital topics such as:
    • Climate-smart agriculture—an essential subject in this arid region
    • Financial literacy
    • Gender equity
    • Education awareness
  • Printers will enable schools to provide printed learning materials, supporting students’ academic progress and making resources accessible even offline.

A Collaborative Effort

This initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our partners: Dell Technologies, Joyineering Fund, and Choice Humanitarian. Their unwavering commitment to digital inclusion and community empowerment has been pivotal in bringing this vision to life.

“Our goal at the Joyineering Fund is to create teamwork to help make the world a better place. We are so proud to be part of these important projects to  enhance the quality lives of those in need with new opportunities, and hopefully all of their generations to come. A huge thanks to Dell, Computer Aid and Choice Humanitarian as well! Hard work, teamwork, dream work!”

A Model for the Future

This solar-powered learning project demonstrates what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration. By combining renewable energy, cutting-edge technology, and community-driven training, we’re creating sustainable access to digital education—empowering both students and their communities with the tools they need to thrive in the digital age.

And this is just the beginning. Together, we are paving the way for a future where no child is left behind—no matter where they live.
