Supplying Laptops to Bwiru IT Education Centre in Tanzania

Bwiru Information Technology Education Centre (BITEC) in Mwanza, Tanzania received 35 laptops from Computer Aid in February 2024.

BITEC has been open for almost a year and provides classes to different groups of students, but it mostly caters to school children attending one of six schools in the village of Bwiru.

Below is a photo of a secondary school class; students are able to sit facing the wall, where they can charge their laptop.

Primary school classes (shown below) are more basic and generally with fewer resources to provide for students compared to secondary school classes. However, the laptops are used to assist younger learners with engaging digital content. They also run classes for out-of-school children.

Below are four students that have just completed the six-week Foundation course and received their certificates.  From the left in the front row, the students are David, Thomas, Irene and Seth.  The instructors at the back are Hans, Bariki, Dismas and Jim.  Bariki is an assistant working at BITEC with six months’ experience since completing college. Bariki has developed the course and delivered it to the students.  The students are mostly Form 4 leavers, who are awaiting the continuation of their studies to Form 5 and 6, or exploring skills they can use in developing a small business in the community.

The BITEC building is also a focus for presentations and meetings by local groups.  Some of these groups are selling products, and others are hosting community events.

You can view a video of desks and chairs being presented to one of the schools hosting BITEC.
