Mamaila Solar Community Hub: Providing IT services in the Limpopo region, South Africa

Mamaila, a rural area in Limpopo’s Greater Letaba Municipality, faces significant challenges. With an unemployment rate of 70% and high levels of poverty, residents have limited access to essential resources such as quality education and reliable internet. Over 60% of households in Mamaila are led by women and children, contributing to gender-based income disparities.

In 2022, the Solar Community Hub was established to address digital exclusion in the area. This initiative, led by Computer Aid in partnership with Dell Technologies and SITA, provides residents, particularly students, with access to technology, the internet, and ICT skills training. In a place where mobile coverage is inconsistent and data costs are high, the hub has become an essential resource for those seeking educational and employment opportunities.

The Zuri Foundation is managing the hub, offering IT training, ICDL certification, computer repair and refurbishment services. From 2024, the hub also offers refurbished laptops at very low rate to make sur that the local community can afford it. These services will equip the community with valuable digital skills and IT equipment  that can open up new opportunities for education and employment.

The hub is more than just a learning space; it empowers the people of Mamaila to overcome barriers to digital access, helping them pursue education and employment in an increasingly connected world. The community has shown strong support for initiatives that promote educational and economic growth, including private schools and small businesses.

The Zuri Foundation is also very active in involving other Solar Community Hubs in South African and Kenya in their programmes. They believe peer to peer learning is a way for the network of SCHs to grow. In 2024, they met with our partner in Kenya and early 2025, they visited Zenzelni team in Mankosi, Eastern Cape. They also organise monthly gathering on zoom with the other partners.
