New Solar Community Hub Launches in Zapopan, Mexico

Technology That Transforms Communities: Five Partners Launch New Solar-Powered Community Hub in Zapopan to Help Close the Digital Divide

Dell-Technologien, in collaboration with Tecnológico de Monterrey, Computerhilfe International, the Equinix Foundation and the Government of Zapopan, have launched a new Solar Community Hub where technology, knowledge, and community converge to enable learning for the digital era while honouring the community’s roots.

  • It is inaugurated together with Dell Technologies, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Computer Aid International, the Equinix Foundation and the Government of Zapopan.
  • It will offer access to technology, digital skills, social services, and community gathering spaces, with the potential to reach 15,073 residents of Nuevo México in Zapopan.
  • It is the fourth Dell Technologies Solar Community Hub in Mexico, designed with solar energy and recycling containers.

Dell-Technologien Solar Community Hubs are a transformative initiative that prioritises equitable access by connecting under-resourced communities with solutions and tools for long-term capacity building. To date, Dell Technologies has built 63 Solar Community Hubs internationally to empower communities by offering sustainable solutions tailored to local needs.

Located in Zapopan, a dynamic economic centre in western Mexico with 1.48 million inhabitants, this facility is the fourth of its kind in the country, joining existing hubs in La Campana-Altamira, Monterrey, Ecatepec, and Xalapa. One of the major digital challenges of the State of Jalisco, where Zapopan is located, is the need for digital skills and capabilities development. Specifically, the Dell Technologies Solar Hub will give the inhabitants of this zone skills development and tools through training for the benefit of their community, to be a key part of the economic growth of the region and the country.

Some characteristics of this new hub are:

  • Sustainable design created from multiple recycled shipping containers, with renewable energy from solar panels
  • Equipped with more than 40 Dell Pro All-in-One Plus Dell Pro 14 Plus Laptops
  • Diverse offer of workshops on technology and digital skills for new ways of working
  • Access to social services — including healthcare, education and development — while also providing reliable internet and offering a safe space for community gatherings

As the strategic implementation partner, Computerhilfe International has led the deployment of the Solar Community Hub infrastructure and coordinates the network of local collaborators to ensure the programme’s success. Locally, the project is further strengthened by:

  • Tecnológico de Monterrey, Guadalajara Campus, which will offer a range of activities focused on technology and digital inclusion, health and well-being, education and development, through courses, workshops, and learning experiences for all members of the community
  • Die Equinix Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Equinix Inc., which leverages its digital infrastructure expertise to support connectivity
  • The Government of Zapopan, led by Mayor Juan José Frangie Saade, which provides institutional support and facilitates integration with local social programmes

Juan Francisco Aguilar, General Director of Dell Technologies Mexico, said: “We know that technology is a bridge to success. With this Solar Community Hub in Zapopan, we reaffirm our commitment to closing the digital divide and generating opportunities for communities to thrive in the digital economy.”

Juan José Frangie Saade, Mayor of Zapopan, said: “This project reflects our commitment to innovation and social inclusion. We want every citizen to have access to tools that transform their future.”

Claudia Félix, Vice President of the Central West Campus at Tecnológico de Monterrey, stated: “The solar community hub in Zapopan holds tremendous significance. This space is designed to democratise access to technology by providing tools, guidance, and training that enable children, youth, and adults to develop digital skills that positively impact their lives. Here, technology will be an enabler of talent, creativity, and well-being.”

Alejandro Espinosa, Project Manager and Implementation Lead at Computer Aid International, said: “Our vision at Computer Aid is to build a world where everyone has access to digital technologies and the opportunities they provide. This Dell Technologies initiative gives us the opportunity to work collaboratively with Tecnológico de Monterrey and Equinix to help improve the lives of communities around the world by providing them with the technology they need.”

Eduardo Carvalho, Managing Director, LatAm, Equinix, said: “Digital inclusion and sustainability go hand in hand, and this Solar Community Hub embodies that principle. This launch demonstrates what’s possible when technology companies, educational institutions, and local partners unite around a shared mission. Through the Equinix Foundation’s collaboration with Dell Technologies, Computer Aid International, and Tecnológico de Monterrey, we’re not just bringing connectivity to an underserved community — we’re creating a sustainable model for digital inclusion that can transform lives and strengthen local economies. We’re excited to see the impact this hub will have in Zapopan and look forward to expanding this model across Mexico and beyond.”
