IT asset disposition (ITAD) is the process of securely retiring, wiping, refurbishing, and either redeploying or recycling end-of-life IT hardware. In the UK, ITAD services are how businesses meet their GDPR, WEEE and CSR obligations when devices leave the estate. A full ITAD service covers every stage a device goes through once it leaves your estate. That includes secure collection, data sanitisation, physical destruction where required, hardware grading, refurbishment, redistribution, and WEEE-compliant recycling for anything that cannot be reused.

Collection is handled by certified, satellite-tracked couriers. Assets are scanned on loading and taken to Tier 1’s secure List X facility in Manchester, and a Waste Transfer Note is issued at pickup.
Data is then sanitised using HMG and NIST-approved software via a three-level overwrite with verification and a full disk audit including serial numbers. Where a drive is inoperable or damaged, it is physically removed, shredded, and logged by serial number, with a certificate of destruction issued.
Reusable assets are graded, refurbished, and prepared for redeployment. Anything that cannot be reused is recycled in line with the European WEEE directive, with a zero percent landfill policy.
Any provider handling UK business data should be able to evidence current, recognised certifications. Tier 1 Asset Management holds Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001 for information security, ISO 14001 for environmental management, HM Government accreditations and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, and is fully GDPR compliant. Data is wiped to CESG and NIST standards on every collection, and the same standards apply whether devices are collected from head office, a data centre or a distributed workforce.
