Solar Learning Lab at Bokamoso School, South Africa

The Solar Powered Learning Lab at Bokamoso School, is creating a unique space for learning, and the opportunity for students to learn 21st-century skills.

The labs will be managed and training delivered by local partner Code for Change South Africa. They work to bridge the skills gap in the ICT job market in South Africa by training students in skills ranging from PC Basics to intermediate coding, and IT Technician workshops. Their intensive, hands-on training programs empower and develop young people to be competent in ICT and enable them to use their skills to find purposeful employment and enhance the quality of their lives. Change the World will deliver the Dell Youth Learning program to leverage the technology of the Solar Learning Lab in most inclusive and impactful way for students of Bokamoso School.

A lack of up-to-date learning resources prevents Bokamoso’s students from accessing the same opportunities as their peers affecting their competitiveness and confidence levels when enrolling in further education. The project will break this cycle and show Bokamoso School that their students deserve the best innovative spaces and tools for learning, bridging the digital divide in communities where this would have the greatest impact.

I have lived, studied and now work in South Africa and have had the privilege to interact with different people from across the world and have realised that we all need ICT no matter the industry or sector you plow your trades in. Being African and seeing the worrying economic state our continent, I realise that we need change. One of the key changes we need to effect as Africans to improve our continents economy and our overall quality of life is to position Africa in the forefront of ICT technology development and not to only be consumers of these technologies. We need a generation that is ICT savvy to enable them to adapt to an evolving technological and industrial world, it is for these reasons that I feel ICT and ICT education is very important.

This project contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

Sustainable Development Goal 4 Our work contributes directly to Target 4.1 of SDG 4, by improving secondary school educational outcomes for boys and girls. Additionally, students are gaining relevant technical skills that will improve their job prospects, contributing to Target 4.4.
Sustainable Development Goal 5 This project directly contributes to Target 5.B of SDG 5, since we select schools who have a similar ratio of girls to boys and actively promote the usage of equipment by both genders, ensuring that no individual is excluded.
Sustainable Development Goal 8 This project contributes to Target 8.6 of SDG 8, since students at Bokamoso School are increasing their job prospects and reducing the likelihood of unemployment after graduating, by gaining desirable employment skills.
Sustainable Development Goal 9 By providing a secondary school with a computer lab and assistive technology such as projectors, allowing thousands of students to access information and communications technology, we are directly contributing to Target 9.C of SDG 9.
